Rain has eased a bit

02.32 China time: 4.7.09

We're safely in our hotel. Tomorrow late afternoon we start the long bus then train trip to Kong Kong.

20.04 China time 4.7.09
After a slow-paced day in familiar Yangshou, we're now on the bus to Guilin, where we'll catch our overnight train to Shenzen.  From there we will cross into Hong Kong and take a train into the city.
Today we saw a chicken go from live to plucked and gutted in 3 minutes. We also saw dogs, waiting in crowded cages ready to be cooked, and live crabs having their backs ripped off.  Sobering!

landslides

a small picture of what we could see today and yesterday!

rice terraces

enjoying the lovely (wet and raining!) rice terraces of long ji area....

we had a very wet walk from 5am!

:-)

The floods we passed between longji and guilin

many crops were totally covered. ducks had been let out of their coups to roam free above the floodlines. people were out on the streets with umbrellas. traffic was thick.

Torrential Rain on the Rice Terraces

Note: These messages begin with the latest one at the top, and progress to the earliest one at the bottom.

Floods

Torrential rain in Guangxi Province, where we are until the evening of Sat. 4th, has caused deadly floods and landslides. We are safe but our group's itinerary has had to be changed. Today was a very long day. We were up at 4.50am, and now it's 8.40pm and we have had only one meal so far! There are some tensions in our group but also some new friendships. We are now on a bus with a Chinese movie playing :) Sent 8.40pm Friday 03 July 2009.

Any weather reports on this heavy rain?

Is there any news of this severe weather here in China being broadcast on outside news?  Surely this is not normal rainfall, unless farmers can grow their crops submerged in a metre of flowing water for what is likely to be the next week!  May people be generous to these hard workers who may be losing their livelihoods today.  We know of at least one woman who was swept into the river.  May there be no more!  (Sent 8pm Friday 03 July 2009)

Last Bus Out

More landslides and rain overnight made for a slow and tricky ride down the gorge road from the rice terraces.  The major route was cut, so we are using the old road.  We got the last bus going our way today!  A woman near our village drowned yesterday in the raging torrents.  We are thankful for our own safety and for the provision of this transport for us.  (Sent 6pm, Friday 03 July 2009)

Heading back to Civilisation

We have decided as a group to head back to civilisation, partly because of the warnings of further landslides that may cut us off.  We need to get on the night train tomorrow for Hong Kong.  (Sent 3pm Friday 03 July 2009)

Still stuck

We are still stuck on the rice terrace at the Guest House.  Our hike was aborted due to the risk of and actual landslides that have blocked roads and collapsed terraces!  Our plan is to return, north of Guilin.  And the power is out too.  Our clothes are all wet and we have no dry ones to change into.  (Sent Friday 03 July 2009)

Stranded:

We are about to have a group discussion to decide on a plan, because it's raining, and landslides have cut the road.  We are stuck high up in the rice terrace adventures!  (Sent Friday 03 July 2009)

Stuck due to rain.

We are in a Guest House atop vast rice terraces.  There are many landslides.  We had a long wet walk along flooded paths and through creek beds from 5am this morning!  A great adventure.  Blind corners, our driver is still on his mobile phone.  Another muddy landslide ... (Sent Thursday 02 July 2009)

Landslides and phones

On a winding mountain road, which was occasionally flooded, we stopped for a digger to clear a landslide.  Our driver is constantly on his mobile phone.  More water on the road.  We're enjoying some fries and barbecued duck.  Yum!  (Sent Wednesday 01 July 2009)

Drenched and Tired

After a whole exhausting day cycling through muddy rocky roads, awestruck by the dramatic sheer cliffs of limestone karsts, we had fresh orange juice.  Overnight train to Shanghai tonight. (Sent Wednesday 24 June 2009)

Stranded

About to have a group discussion to decide on a plan, cos it's raining, and landslides have cut the road. Stuck high up in the rice terraces, north of Guilin. And the power's out too. Wet clothes with no change.

moon hill

yesterday's pics... the view through moon hill!

teaching english

jane and i had an amazing opportunity to teach english in yangshou at owen college to about 35 adults. actually, it's more complex than that. we first made 5 lesson plans in the space of 30 minutes, then trained the other 8 members of our tour group how to lead their english classes... so we ended up running 4 1-hour english lessons at the drop of a hat! we all had fun (students and budding teachers).

yangshou's amazing karsts

we're both pretty exhausted tonight after a whole day of cycling with our group around yangshou (guangxi province). the scenery is really amazingly beautiful!

we visited moon hill, which is a hollowed out limestone karst. we even climbed to the top. we both sweated so, so much. jane was soaked. the local drink sellers were pretty clever... Y5 for drinks at the bottom, but Y10 up the top. they walked with us all the way, ready to sell their cool drinks right out their polystyrene boxes.

Karsts of Yangshuo

29th June
Hot and humid; tall green rice; occasional air-conditioning; the Li River and dramatic limestone karsts seeming to leap right out of the lush carpet of oxygen-generating greenness.

heading bush, english teaching

this afternoon we're leaving the city and heading into village-country for a few days. 2 nights in a local village, then hiking into some magnificent "longji" rice terraces where we'll stay for another 2 nights. on july 5th we should reach hong kong.

now we're off to see a middle school where jane and i are going to each english!!! :) gotta go. bye!

chinese medicine

jane and i subjected ourselves to some chinese medicine today... i had "hot cupping" which produced massive welts on my back. jane had acupuncture and then a massage.

in yangshou

arrived in guilin after a 24 hour train journey, then bus to yangshou where we'll be for 2 nights. very touristy but amazing scenery and lots of activities to do. might get some acupuncture and massage here, plus take in the beautiful surrounds on a bike ride or just chill out in a cafe and catch our breath. next few days after here will be more taxing (and remote) -- walking up rice terraces and staying in out-of-the-way villages.

From Luke and Janey Sunday 28th June

Just finished long train trip from Shanghai to Yangshuo which is near Guilin - about 1500km and took 24 hours.
